GI charged in WikiLeaks case admits making noose

FORT MEADE, Md. (AP) ? An Army private charged with leaking classified material to WikiLeaks said Friday that he tied a bedsheet into a noose while considering suicide during his pretrial confinement in Kuwait.

Pfc. Bradley Manning testified on the fourth day of a pretrial hearing at Fort Meade near Baltimore. Manning testified under cross-examination that he made the noose in Kuwait before he was moved to a Marine Corps brig in Quantico, Va. He claims that his treatment later at Quantico was so harsh that the charges against him should be dismissed.

He arrived at Quantico classified as a suicide risk. Eight days later, he was upgraded to the less-restrictive "prevention of injury" status.

Manning maintains that neither designation was appropriate because he didn't feel like hurting himself after leaving Kuwait.

Under questioning by prosecutor Maj. Ashden Fein, Manning said that upon arrival at Quantico in July 2010, he was told he would be processed into the brig as a suicide risk. He said he noted on his intake form that he had considered suicide.

He also wrote on the form that he was "always planning and never acting" upon suicidal thoughts.

In January 2011, after complaining about his custody classification, Manning met with a board of officers that made custody status recommendations. He said when he was asked about the statement on his intake form about planning and never acting, he told the board that he might have lied.

"I did say it might have been a sarcastic answer," Manning said. "I told them today, the end of January 2011, I'm not suicidal. I'm not trying to harm myself or anything like that."

The testimony marked the first time military prosecutors went face-to-face with Manning.

He spoke publicly Thursday for the first time since his May 2010 arrest, saying he got so used to leg irons and being locked up 23 hours a day that when he was finally transferred to medium-security confinement at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., in April 2011, he felt uneasy moving freely around the cell block.

"There was the sense of, 'OK, I know they're going to put the hammer down on me soon,'" Manning said near the end of his five hours on the witness stand.

Besides being classified "maximum custody," Manning was subjected to additional restraints during his nine months at Quantico. Commanders maintained the extra restrictions despite repeated recommendations by brig psychiatrists that they be eased. They included scratchy, suicide-prevention bedding and sometimes having all his clothing, eyeglasses and reading material removed from his cell.

The military contends the treatment was proper.

At one point during his testimony Thursday, Manning donned a dark-green, suicide-prevention smock resembling an oversized tank top made of stiff, thick fabric. He said it was similar to one he was issued in March 2011, several days after Quantico jailers started requiring him to surrender all his clothing and eyeglasses each night as a suicide-prevention measure. This occurred after he told them ? out of frustration, he said ? that if he really wanted to hurt himself, he could have done so with his underwear waistband or flip-flops.

The 5-foot-3 soldier looked youthful in his dark-blue dress uniform, close-cropped hair and rimless eyeglasses. He was animated, often speaking in emphatic bursts, swiveling in the witness chair and gesturing with his hands.

Also Thursday, the military judge, Army Col. Denise Lind, accepted the terms under which Manning may plead guilty to eight of the 22 charges he faces. Coombs revealed the plea offer in early November, saying it would enable Manning to take responsibility for sending U.S. secrets to WikiLeaks.

Lind hasn't formally accepted the pleas but has indicated she will consider them at a hearing starting Dec. 10.

Under the offer, Manning would plead guilty to certain charges as violations of military regulations rather than as violations of federal espionage and computer security laws. The offenses would then carry maximum prison terms totaling 16 years rather than 72.

The pleas would include admissions that Manning sent WikiLeaks classified memos, Iraq and Afghanistan war logs, Guantanamo Bay prison records and a 2007 video clip of a U.S. helicopter crew gunning down 11 men later found to have included a Reuters news photographer and his driver. The video, titled "Collateral Murder" on WikiLeaks, garnered worldwide attention. The Pentagon concluded the troops acted appropriately during the attack, having mistaken the camera equipment for weapons.

The government could still prosecute Manning for all 22 counts he faces, including aiding the enemy. That offense carries a maximum penalty of life in prison.

Manning is accused of engineering the biggest leak of classified material in U.S. history. Besides the video, he is charged with sending hundreds of thousands of classified Iraq and Afghanistan war logs and more than 250,000 diplomatic cables to WikiLeaks while working as an intelligence analyst in Baghdad in 2009 and 2010.

Majority of Britons want press watchdog backed by law - poll

LONDON (Reuters) - More than two-thirds of Britons are in favour of an independent press regulator established by law, according to an opinion poll published in the Guardian newspaper on Wednesday, a day before a judge is expected to issue a report on problems in the industry.

The poll found that 79 percent of Britons surveyed want the government to introduce legislation to create an independent press regulator. Only 9 percent oppose tough measures regulating the press.

Senior judge Brian Leveson is expected on Thursday to recommend a new independent body with statutory powers over the press instead of the current system of self-regulation that the industry wants to retain.

Leveson oversaw a year-long public inquiry into the press that was prompted by a phone-hacking scandal at Rupert Murdoch's News of the World Sunday, a News Corp (NWSA.O) tabloid the media tycoon then shut down.

The poll, conducted by YouGov on behalf of the Media Standards Trust, found that over 80 percent want national newspapers to be obliged to sign up to the new system by law.

Most of the British newspaper industry is opposed to a regulator underpinned by law, as they argue it would curb freedom of speech.

Brief exercise immediately enhances memory: Results apply to older adults both with and without cognitive deficits

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? A short burst of moderate exercise enhances the consolidation of memories in both healthy older adults and those with mild cognitive impairment, scientists with UC Irvine's Center for the Neurobiology of Learning & Memory have discovered.

Most research has focused on the benefits of a long-term exercise program on overall health and cognitive function with age. But the UCI work is the first to examine the immediate effects of a brief bout of exercise on memory.

In their study, post-doctoral researcher Sabrina Segal and neurobiologists Carl Cotman and Lawrence Cahill had people 50 to 85 years old with and without memory deficits view pleasant images -- such as photos of nature and animals -- and then exercise on a stationary bicycle for six minutes at 70 percent of their maximum capacity immediately afterward.

One hour later, the participants were given a surprise recall test on the previously viewed images. Results showed a striking enhancement of memory by exercise in both the healthy and cognitively impaired adults, compared with subjects who did not ride the bike.

"We found that a single, short instance of moderately intense exercise particularly improved memory in individuals with memory deficits," Segal said. "Because of its implications and the need to better understand the mechanism by which exercise may enhance memory, we're following up this study with an investigation of potential underlying biological factors."

She believes the improved memory may be related to the exercise-induced release of norepinephrine, a chemical messenger in the brain known to play a strong role in memory modulation. This hypothesis is based on previous work demonstrating that increasing norepinephrine through pharmacological manipulation sharpens memory and that blocking norepinephrine impairs memory.

In the more recent research, Segal and her colleagues discovered that levels of salivary alpha amylase, a biomarker that reflects norepinephrine activity in the brain, significantly increased in participants after exercise. This correlation was especially strong in people with memory impairment.

"The current findings offer a natural and relatively safe alternative to pharmacological interventions for memory enhancement in healthy older individuals as well as those who suffer from cognitive deficits," Segal noted. "With a growing population of the aged, the need for improvement of quality of life and prevention of mental decline is more important than ever before."

Study results appear in the November issue (Volume 32, Number 4) of the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease. UCI's Alzheimer's Disease Research Center and the National Institute of Mental Health (grant number 575082), a division of the National Institutes of Health, supported the research.

Fun Games Kids : Play Fun Games For Families

Does your family always split up into separate rooms after dinner? Is family life at home boring? If so, there's a way to fix that. Aside from traditional board games that kids will frown upon once they hear the mention of them, there are some unique and fun games for families that can be played.
The key to playing fun games for families is to make sure that you're playing something everyone has a fair shot of winning. Another factor that helps is to play something new. This will get the kids excited and make the event more interesting.
Do you have more than one board game in the house? The answer is probably yes. If so, take out the boards and leave the pieces in their boxes. If a game has a set of dice, grab them. If not, find them from somewhere else in the house or buy them. Next, set the boards up next to each other on a table so it looks like a race track. Then, get a toy car for each player.
The name of this game is The Big Race. Everyone has a fair shot of winning because it's completely based on luck, and even if someone is losing, they still have a shot to win.
The first player rolls the dice. If they roll a 6 and a 5, they move 11 spots on the first board. Then the next player rolls, and so on. The object of the game is to be the first player to the finish line (the last spot on the last board). The best part is that if someone keeps rolling a 1 and a 2 and is way behind, they're still not out of it. Why? Because if you roll doubles, you roll again. If you roll doubles again, you still roll again, and so on. This keeps everyone in the game and excited at all times.
Another one of the fun games for families is Four Corners. The first thing you need to do is tear up four pieces of paper and write numbers on them: 1, 2, 3, and 4. Decipher which corners of the room will be attributed what numbers. The number caller stands in the middle of the room with the numbers in a hat and tells all the players to pick a corner, any corner. Once everyone has picked a corner (the time limit to pick a corner can also be used with stoppage of music), the number caller picks a number from the hat. If corner 2 is picked, all players in corner two are out and join the corner caller in the middle of the room. This goes on until only one player is left. That player will then be the new corner caller.
There are many unique opportunities out there when it comes to fun games for families. If you want more great ideas, do a search for P.E. activities.
Try the two fun games listed above today!

96% The House I Live In

All Critics (45) | Top Critics (17) | Fresh (43) | Rotten (2)

The House I Live In is a work of journalism, not propaganda: Jarecki has done his research and leaves it to you to decide what to make of it.

If [it] takes a while to focus, it eventually becomes the conversation starter the subject desperately needs.

Jarecki takes a highly original approach to create a compelling, thought-provoking look at a highly relevant and controversial topic.

An absorbing, disturbing sit.

It's a film as profoundly sad as it is enraging and potentially galvanizing, and it's one of the most important pieces of nonfiction to hit the screen in years.

Jarecki's case is so compelling that, when he concludes by comparing the drug war to the Holocaust, the obvious charge of hyperbole doesn't quite stick.

One of the best documentaries out this year, and a must-see for Senate and Congress in America.

An angry and personal attack on America's war on drugs contends it is a grotesquely wasteful public-works scheme.

Jarecki is a stickler for sticking to his subject, or sub-subject, until it squeals like a leech victim.

Jarecki offers 100 small conclusions rather than one big one for you to take away.

This urgent and formidably smart movie - perhaps the year's most important political documentary - has opened minds and changed laws already.

Tells a complex story with troubling ease.

Persuasively argues that punitive laws against users have historically involved disproportionately targeting poor, non-white communities.

Jarecki's parade of experts and eyewitnesses is impressive, as are his arguments that race and class prejudice enter into the policing efforts of America's drug warriors.

Jarecki's conclusion is powerfully plausible

There's no confusion about Jarecki's point of view in The House I Live In- he's out to make the case that America's drug laws cause far more damage, to individuals and communities, than drug use ever has

The film deserves credit for offering a unique perspective on a relevant social issue.

The House I Live In is depressing stuff, but it sparks the fires of anger, and from that anger, possible action.

This film could serve as a potent tool for those trying to change 40 years of public policy.

A thought-provoking, compelling documentary that encourages you to look at our national drug policy in a broader context.

Statistics abound in this thorough analysis of the declared war [on drugs] that, like Vietnam, we are losing.

A devastating dispatch from the front lines of America's war on drugs, the film tracks the rise of the prison-industrial complex as masterfully as the filmmaker's previous work took on its older military-industrial cousin.

Book Review: Struck By Lightning by Chris Colfer

Nov 24, 2012

Best known as Kurt Hummel on Glee, Chris Colfer delivers a quirky and cynical debut novel about a 16-year-old wannabe journalist. Kidzworld reviews Struck By Lightning by Chris Colfer.

The Dream

Carson Phillips has always felt superior to the idiots in his high school. None of them have GPAs of four point two or dreams of escaping their small town like he does. If Carson had it his way, he would attend Northwestern University, become a journalist and eventually go on to become the editor of the New Yorker.? But according to his school counsellor, being editor of his school paper doesn?t cut it in terms of extra-curriculars for admissions to Northwestern anymore. He needs something more. Something that will set him apart. A literary magazine.

Blackmail

The idea is the easy part. Even getting permission and funding is relatively easy. It?s his fellow students - who hate his jaded, opinionated nature - who refuse to participate. In order to get submissions, Carson must resort to blackmail. But does that make him a bad person? Will this give him bad karma?

The Bottom Line

Written in the format of a journal, Struck By Lightning is the story of a jaded anti-hero. Carson?s fellow students treat him horribly, but does he bring it on himself? His decision to use blackmail will make readers question their loyalties: is Carson the good guy or the bad guy? Do we want him to succeed and get accepted to Northwestern or not? At only 258 pages and large font, this is a quick and easy read. Gleeks will enjoy delving into the quirky mind of Chris Colfer.

Have Your Say

After Sandy?s deluge, mold and dust pose threats

John Makely / NBC News

Ken Court removes sheetrock and plywood damaged by the floodwaters of Hurricane Sandy from his home in Breezy Point.

By Maggie Fox, NBC News

From his perch on top of his father?s house in Breezy Point, N.Y., Ken Court can see an array of health disasters in the making.

?There are asbestos roofs that have collapsed near the ocean,? says Court, a 52-year-old roofer. ?There is a lot of dust. You see people walking around with masks on. You use the hand cleaners all day long.?

Breezy Point sits at the tip of the peninsula jutting into the waters south of Brooklyn where Jamaica Bay, New York Bay and the Atlantic Ocean come together. Much of the close-knit, blue-collar neighborhood was destroyed when Superstorm Sandy hit three weeks ago ? swamped in the storm surge, roofs ripped by flailing winds or burned to the ground?in a six-alarm fire that took out block after block of homes.

Now it?s one of the last places left without power or clean water, with no ETA on when either will be restored. And as Court works day in and day out to clean up the mess, he sees long-term trouble wherever he looks.

"You should really wear masks. I remember that everyone in 9/11, when they went there to help, they got sick,? Court told NBCNews in a telephone interview.

Asbestos and other chemicals from the collapsed World Trade Centers created a pall of dust that persisted in lower Manhattan for months after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks. Firefighters, police and other rescue workers are eligible for federal compensation for the illnesses they have developed since the cleanup ? most recently 50 different types of cancer.

People who were in the area have higher death rates in general than similar populations, and were especially likely to develop respiratory diseases and asthma. Asbestos can cause a rare type of lung cancer called mesothelioma.

While the dust caused by the Sandy cleanup isn?t nearly as bad, Court isn't taking chances. Asbestos is only a problem if it is kicked up in dust and breathed in ? but he?s seeing plenty of dust being generated as wrecking crews pile up and remove the debris. "Those corrugated roofs on the houses down by the ocean ? they?re all asbestos,? he said.

The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene advises on its website that "While Sandy has not caused problems with outdoor air quality, indoor dust, mold, fumes from temporary heating sources and the use of strong cleaning products can be irritating to the eyes, throat, and lungs. Dust can also be produced by repair and debris removal. In addition, debris removal and repair work can lead to injuries of various types.?

John Makely / NBC News

Breezy Point residents clean up after Hurricane Sandy
Kate Sisk. at her summer home at 21 Jamaica Walk in white jump suit trying to remove the fiberglass in the crawlspace before mold starts to grow.

What concerns Court most, however, is mold. His 79-year-old father, Rod, has emphysema ?and needs supplemental oxygen. ?We got a foot of water up into the first floor. We are just ripping everything out and starting fresh,? said Court, who grew up in Breezy Point and who now lives in Port Jefferson Station on Long Island.

?Right now I have men ripping out the tile. We can?t take a chance with mold with my dad,? Court added. ?Now that we took up the tile floor, it?s all wet under there and it?s black.?

Health officials say Court?s doing the right thing. Anything that might turn moldy should be removed or cleaned with a bleach solution. Mold spores can cause allergic reactions or asthma in people who are sensitive to them.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has done many studies on the health dangers that linger after hurricanes, but the CDC's parent agency, the Health and Human Services Department, is not making federal officials available to talk about Sandy's aftermath.

Still no clean water
Despite the flooding that swamped water treatment plants, poured into subway tunnels and flushed raw sewage into rivers, most of New York City?s tapwater supply remained clean. But Breezy Point?s water pipes were damaged so badly that the water still isn?t safe to drink, according to local authorities.

?Breezy Point Cooperative is in the process of re-establishing its internal drinking water system and the City will meet with the Breezy Point Cooperative to ensure that it can safely and reliably provide potable water to its residents," the New York health department said in a statement.

?DO NOT drink the water from the faucets. Do not use this water to cook, wash yourself or wash food, make ice, brush teeth or for any other activity involving consumption of water,? the Breezy Point Cooperative web site advises. It?s not even okay to boil it ? meaning chemicals could be contaminating the water, also.

Andrew Juhl, an ecologist and oceanographer at Columbia University, has been testing the waters around New York City for years and knows well what could have seeped into the broken water pipes at Breezy Point.

?With the hurricane there was this enormous flood of water that came into the city and flooded sewage treatment plants and also damaged pipes,? Juhl told NBCNews. ?It is possible that there was a lot of sewage released. We don?t really know. No one was out sampling at that time.?

His tests the days after Sandy hit showed lots of bacteria in the water, however ? enough to where people shouldn?t touch the water without washing afterwards.

?We measure Enterococcus,? he said. It?s found in the guts of warm-blooded animals, including people. ?If you find it in the environment, you know it was recently in the body of a warm-blooded animal.? While enterococci are not themselves a big threat to health, if they?re in the water, so are other germs. These include anything that the people and animals in the area contribute to sewage, from hepatitis to parasites such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia lamblia that may cause diarrhea and stomach cramps.

One thing that people may fear is cholera, but cholera isn?t commonly found in New Yorkers, and so it?s very unlikely to be in the sewage or water.

?The most common illness that people get is gastrointestinal problems,? Juhl says. ?They get nausea, diarrhea, cramping, skin rashes, eye infections -- that kind of thing.?

You don?t have to drink the water to get ill ? people who touch the water can touch their eyes, mouths and noses and become infected. Juhl?s team sampled flooded basements in Queens and found the water was teeming with bacteria commonly found in sewage. They also found germs all over dried-out storm debris.

?The stuff we sampled up in Rockland County had been sitting around dry for a week and it still had really high (bacterial) counts. That actually surprised me,? Juhl said. ?We haven?t done that kind of sampling before and we don?t have a context for it.? Maybe there are really high counts there all the time.?

Nonetheless, it could make people handling it sick. ?They should wear gloves. They should wear face masks. They should make sure they clean themselves really well before they eat. We don?t know what the specific threat is. l would be prudent,? Juhl advises.

Court?s doing just that. ?Most people are wearing protective equipment when they are working in the basements,? he said. ?You wear boots.?

Regional leaders meet in Uganda over Congo crisis

KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) ? Regional leaders met in Uganda Saturday in the latest summit intended to find a solution to the crisis in eastern Congo as the M23 rebel group takes territory from the army and threatens to topple President Joseph Kabila's government.

Uganda, whose leader is acting as a mediator, has had its credibility tarnished by revelations in a U.N. report that some of its military officials actively support M23 rebels, who this week took control of the provincial capital Goma as well as the city of Sake in Congo's east. Rwanda is also accused of supporting the rebels. Both countries deny the charges.

Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki and Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete also attended the Kampala summit, which is being held under the auspices of a regional bloc called the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region, or ICGLR, of which Congo is a member.

A previous summit of the ICGLR endorsed the creation of a "neutral international force" to police eastern Congo. Tanzania has already offered to contribute some of the 4,000 troops needed, but the force's mandate is not yet clear and funding remains a problem. Ugandan diplomats said regional leaders were likely to talk in detail about the force.

Kabila was in Uganda for the talks Saturday, but Rwandan President Paul Kagame was absent. Ugandan officials said M23 representatives were not invited to the summit and denied reports that Jean-Marie Runiga, the M23's political leader, was in the country for separate negotiations with the Ugandan government.

"I have not seen them," Crispus Kiyonga, Uganda's defense minister, who held meetings with some M23 officials before Goma was captured by M23, said of the rebels. Ugandan officials say previous meetings with M23 rebels were held with the knowledge of Kabila, who at first declined to negotiate with the rebels but later changed his stance.

"This is a summit for regional leaders, not a negotiation meeting. The rebels cannot be in the summit," said Okello Oryem, Uganda's deputy minister of foreign affairs.

M23 is made up of hundreds of officers who deserted the Congolese army in April. Since then the rebels have occupied vast swaths of territory in mineral-rich eastern Congo, and their capture of Goma this week put pressure on President Joseph Kabila to negotiate with the rebels, who accuse his government of failing to honor the terms of a 2009 peace deal that incorporated them into the national army. The rebels took Goma without much of a battle, with the Congolese army fleeing in disarray and U.N. peacekeepers holding fire.

M23 leaders insist they will attempt to capture the Congolese capital of Kinshasa if Kabila does not negotiate directly with them. Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni, Congolese President Kabila and Rwanda President Kagame said in a statement Wednesday that they would not tolerate M23's talk of toppling the Kinshasa government, demanding that the rebels pull out of Goma and make a retreat. But the rebels went ahead and took Sake.

"In solidarity with the Congolese people and their counterparts, President Yoweri Museveni and President Kagame made it clear that even if there were legitimate grievances by the mutinying group known as the M23, they cannot accept expansion of this war or entertain the idea of overthrowing the legitimate government of the DRC (Congo) or undermining its authority," the presidents' statement said. "Therefore the M23 rebel group must immediately stop its offensive and pull out of Goma."

On Friday, Congo's president suspended the army chief of staff following the publication of a United Nations report which reveals that Gen. Gabriel Amisi oversaw a criminal network selling arms to rebels in the country's troubled east. The rebels also took the town of Sake.

Congo's troubled east has been plagued by decades of violence, and the latest rebellion is a reincarnation of a previous conflict. The rebel group that took Goma dubs itself the M23, a reference to the March 23, 2009 peace deal that paved the way for fighters from a now-defunct rebel group to join the army. Charging that the peace accord was not implemented, soldiers defected from the Congo army in April to form the M23. Both the M23 and the previous rebel group, known as the CNDP, are widely believed to be backed by neighboring Rwanda, which has fought two wars against its much-larger neighbor.

Iron Bowl 2012: Alabama Welcomes Struggling Auburn In Marquee College Football Rivalry

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) ? So much has changed since the last time Alabama welcomed Auburn into its immense home stadium.

The second-ranked Crimson Tide, victims of the largest comeback in Iron Bowl history two years ago, is the team with flourishing Southeastern Conference and national title aspirations going into Saturday's game.

The Tigers (3-8, 0-7 SEC) bare scant resemblance to the team that Cam Newton rallied from 24 points down two years ago on their way to a national title.

With everything left to play for, Alabama (10-1, 6-1) is a 31.5 favorite in what might be one of the bigger mismatches the Iron Bowl rivalry has seen. The Tide defensive end Damion Square gives a simple explanation for what's dangerous about this opponent: "It's Auburn."

"It's a rivalry and it's important to them just like it's important to us," Square said. "I know that they're going to come play some bigtime football. Those guys get recruited like we get recruited. They're real talented guys and they can do their job well. So despite what they've got going on down there, they're going to come down here and try to win them a football game."

Auburn hasn't put up much of a fight against top-tier SEC competition the past two seasons, except for a two-point loss to No. 8 LSU early in the season.

Tigers coach Gene Chizik faces a performance evaluation by athletic director Jay Jacobs and President Jay Gogue after the game with his job potentially on the line.

Chizik said it will take "a near-flawless" performance to pull off the upset.

"Our guys understand this is a one-game season," he said. "They're going into it with excitement and passion."

A Tide win at nearly 102,000-seat Bryant-Denny Stadium would lock up a trip to Atlanta for the SEC championship game against No. 3 Georgia with a shot at playing for a second straight BCS title and third in four years. Alabama climbed into that position when Oregon and Kansas State were upset ? the kind of fate the Tide is trying to avoid.

"If your best football game is not good enough to win, then I'm OK with that," Alabama coach Nick Saban said. "I just want the players to play their best game and have the right disposition about doing that, rather than being caught up in the circumstances of what's at stake."

Alabama is loaded with finalists for national honors like quarterback AJ McCarron (Johnny Unitas Golden Arm), center Barrett Jones (Outland Trophy) and Dee Milliner (Jim Thorpe Award).

Auburn has an ever-shuffling starting lineup at several positions including quarterback, where Jonathan Wallace becomes the second freshman passer to start for the Tigers in the Iron Bowl.

"No one's believing that we can go down there and win," Auburn defensive tackle Angelo Blackson said. "Statistically, it's not possible, but as a team we're going to come in there and fight to the end. We're not going to lay down again. We're not happy to just be in the game with them. We're going to go down there and try to win."

The numbers, at least, set the stage for a potentially lopsided game.

The Tigers will put the nation's 112th-rated offense against the No. 2 defense, which allows the fewest points nationally.

"There's not a lot of true what you would be able to say 'weakness' on their defense," Chizik said. "You've just got to find ways to get first downs and try to hit a big play here and there, but they're hard to come by."

The Tigers will try to do that with tailbacks Tre Mason and Onterio McCalebb ? who returned a kick for a touchdown in last season's meeting ? and wide receiver Emory Blake, easily Wallace's most reliable target.

Alabama tailbacks Eddie Lacy and T.J. Yeldon bring the SEC's No. 2 rushing offense against a defense at the bottom of the league in defending the run. Making things even more interesting, Yeldon was a longtime Auburn commitment before signing with the Tide in January.

The freshman has already racked up 809 yards, just 61 behind his backfield mate Lacy.

"I'm happy he's on our side," Tide guard Chance Warmack said.

McCarron, meanwhile, faces a secondary that has had six different starting combinations and only produced one interception.

McCarron was getting Heisman Trophy buzz two weeks ago before a two-interception game against No. 9 Texas A&M.

Wallace was making his first SEC start that day in a 38-0 defeat to Georgia and might be one of several freshmen starting for the Tigers.

Auburn's Blake is hoping to get a chance to test the message he's heard from fans since arriving in the state from Texas.

"Even my freshmen year, I had some fans tell me, 'It doesn't matter if you lose every game. As long as you beat Alabama at the end of the year, we'll be happy,'" Blake said. "That's just how much impact this game has on our fans."

MTN files complaint against Ugandan magistrate

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - South African telecoms group MTN has lodged a complaint with the Uganda judicial service against one of the east African country's chief magistrates, after MTN's senior executives were summoned to face tax fraud charges.

MTN accuses the magistrate of unprofessional conduct after MTN Group CEO Sifiso Dabengwa and 12 officials including the chairman and CEO of MTN Uganda were summoned to court on December 12 to face charges of tax evasion, conspiracy to make false customs declarations and conspiracy to evade taxes.

MTN said it had not been aware of the summons and heard of them through media reports.

"A perusal of the summons shows that, although the order to issue them was made on the 19th November 2012, they were dated 7th November 2012," which was also a day after the magistrate who issued them transferred the case to the director of public prosecutions, the company said in a statement on Thursday.

"There was no charge sheet on the record nor was there a record of proceedings before (the magistrate) between 6th November, when she pronounced her ruling in an open court with counsel for all parties present, and 19th November, when the order was supposedly issued."

The company has previously denied the charges and says they were initiated by a former employee who himself is accused of defrauding MTN of millions of dollars.

MTN has sued the employee for embezzlement. He had initiated the case against MTN as a private prosecution last month but a court ruled on November 6 the public prosecutor should take it over.

The magistrate's court was not immediately available to comment.

Reasons to Outsource | City Business Community

Reasons to Outsource Reasons to Outsource Another way to extend your capacity is outsourcing. Outsourcing consists of arranging for some of your work to be performed by another person or business. It enables you to focus on your own core competencies while gaining access to expertise in other areas. The reasons why you may want to outsource some activities include cost savings, skills, flexibility, innovation and experience.

Cost savings

The main reason for outsourcing is to save money. Outsourcing may be cheaper than doing something yourself because the supplier has economies of scale, giving you cheaper access to their technology or expertise. Without having to make a large front-end investment, you can also undertake new projects without a big financial risk.

Skills

One of the limitations of going solo is that you may not have all of the skills necessary for a particular job. Outsourcing is a way to gain access to people with the right skills without having to hire staff.

Flexibility

Outsourcing can make your operation more flexible by giving you quick access to short-term resources. For example, outsourcing enables you to bid for several jobs at once without worrying about how you will handle all the work if you get it.

Innovation

Innovation is often the hallmark of a successful solo business. However, sometimes the ideas stay submerged in your subconscious. One way to get a fresh viewpoint is to outsource part of the job to someone who can innovate for you.

Experience

Outsourcing is a way to bring the benefits of another person?s experience into your operation. If you do not have enough experience to confidently take on a job, then outsourcing will not only get the job done, but you will also gain additional experience in the process.

Okay hang on a sec, ive got a question. The demigods didnt really betray the olympians did they? Only one among them is the traitor. Will you be sending a PM to whoever whose going to play that role? Because according to your suggested interrogation questions, it gives me the impression that the demigods have all deliberately betrayed the olympians.. yet the background info tells us that the olympians were merely given some "brainwash" effects to make it seem like the demigods were betrayers.

You've pretty much got it. They fought in the war and stood out as heroes. The best of their generation. Kronos used the goddess of memory and she gave the Olympians fake memories in which the demigods turn out to e traitors. They were all just suddenly taken in for interrogation and have to idea what is going on, except that they're the enemy now. The interrogators are trying to get them to tell the 'truth' but they were never on the opposing side, they never betrayed Olympus, and the interrogators believe they are lying.
It it a little more clear now?
